Academic Cycle

  • The Graduate Program in Oceanography presents an academic cycle based on semesters: 4 for Master's Degree and 8 for Doctorate. Therefore, subject registrations are semiannually. Students must register themselves in Mandatory and Elective Subjects (Basic, Advanced and Specific), and Special Topics (Electives) are also available.

Subjects

Mandatory Subjects: They aim to assist students' graduation regarding the preparation of presentations and scientific projects, as well as developing their didactics in the classroom.

Note 1: It is recommended that all new students take Subject 11245P - Scientific Methodology during the 1st year semester of the course.

Note 2: Discipline 11186P - Seminar I must be taken on the 2nd semester of the course.

Note 3: Teaching Internship Subjects can be taken in any semester of the course.

Basic Oceanography Elective Subjects: They aim to level students' knowledges in Oceanography. These subjects will be offered annually in their respective semesters. The student, in contact with his/her mentor, must attend at least one of these two subjects for MSc. candidates, while both are mandatory for PhD candidates:

Descriptive Oceanography (offer in the 1st semester, 3 credits) and Integrated Oceanographic Processes (offer in the 2nd semester, 3 credits).

Advanced Oceanography Elective Subjects: They aim to provide the Program students with advanced knowledge in the main areas of Oceanography addressed in their research theme. These subjects will be offered annually in their respective semesters. The student, in contact with his/her mentor, must attend at least one of these two subjects:

Marine Biogeochemistry (offer in the 2nd semester, 3 credits), Geophysical Fluids Dynamics (offer in the 2nd semester, 3 credits), and Coastal and Marine Geology (offer in the 2nd semester, 3 credits).

Specific Elective Subjects: They aim to provide an expanded and integrated graduation in Oceanography, as well as enrich students' training in their respective areas of interest. These subjects will be offered according to the students' demand.

Special Topics: They are temporary and may exist for two years at most. After this period, a Special Topic (ST) is either extinguished or will become an Elective Course after the formalities, which, in general, depends on the demand.

Workload

Minimum workload required to obtain a degree in the Graduate Program in Oceanology:

Master's Degree: 20 credits, distributed in 8 (six) mandatory credits (Mandatory Subjects of Seminars I and II, Graduate Teaching Internship I and Scientific Methodology), plus at least 3 (three) credits in the Elective Subjects of Basic Oceanography and at least 3 (three) credits in the Elective Subjects of Advanced Oceanography. Missing credits may be completed with credits from: (I) Elective Subjects of this program, (II) subjects studied in other Graduate Programs, and (II) Scientific Production of the student. For cases (II) and (III), the criteria established in the Program Internal Rules will be followed.

Doctorate: 36 credits distributed in 10 (ten) mandatory credits (Mandatory Subjects of Seminars I and II, Teaching Internship at Graduate I, Teaching Internship at Graduate II and Scientific Methodology), plus at least 6 (six) credits in the Elective Subjects of Basic Oceanography and at least 3 (three) credits in the Elective Subjects of Advanced Oceanography. In the same way as the Master's Degree, missing credits may be completed with credits from: (I) Elective Subjects of this program, (II) subjects studied in other Graduate Programs and (III) Scientific Production of the student. For cases (II) and (III), the criteria established in the Program Internal Rules will be followed.
